The RedMonk unconference rocked!

I spent Monday at the RedMonk unconference. It was a collection of folks talking about stuff related to open source. It was an excellent, high value time.

RedMonk is an open source analyst firm. They are covering the issues and products in open source.

The RedMonk team is a smart, interesting, amusing group of folks who struck a great balance between a free-for-all and dull and boring. Michael Coté was quiet and insightful. When he had something to say, it was worth hearing. James Governor's wry wit, continuous twittering (he's real-time connected to a lot of folks), and ability to cut to the heart of issues made for a very good time. Stephen O'Grady is the guy that keeps things on track and focused.

An open source analyst firm is an interesting idea. It's definitely valuable for a seasoned team to help keep software consumers (enterprises) on track as they adopt a combination of proprietary, open, open source, vendor supported open source, etc. technologies. I look forward to see how the RedMonk folks can grow their consultancy beyond the core 3 superstars into a self-sustaining company. But isn't that always the challenge with a professional services company?

I'm looking forward to briefing RedMonk on lift's progress and get their feedback. I'm also wicked glad I got to meet these guys and spend the day learning about the open source ecosystem, community and the challenges faced by all parts of the ecosystem.

. Following James Governor on Twitter during the unconference, the energy was palpable. I'm sorry I missed your demo; it does seem to have sparked interest in a few corners, as I've seen mention pop up more and more often.

David: sorry for the delayed response - i somehow just ran across this post. but anyway, very glad you enjoyed the day - i know we enjoyed the presentation.

we're seeing a significant increase in interest around lift, so please do keep us posted.
