Ubuntu released 8.10 knowing there was a nasty defect

I had a rant about Ubuntu 8.10 being a buggy release. Turns out that the Canonical people knew about the defect and release Intrepid anyway. The problem impacts about 10% of modern laptops... ones with the most common Intel WiFi chipset. The defect has not been fixed. The workaround doesn't work. What are these people thinking?

I think you're a little bit unfair. If you read the list of comments at the link you provided, you'll see they kind of sort of believed the bug was nailed at the end of last month when 8.10 was about to ship. I still think Canonical did the wrong thing - they should have disabled the faulty driver and let owners of potential problematic laptops read on the net about the problem and load that driver at their own risk. As it is right now, these owners have laptops that just freeze several times a day without explanation.

Dave: If you don't want to get burned, stay away from the bleeding edge.
1. It takes time for something as large as an operating system release to stabilize. Especially a linux distro.
2. The Ubuntu release process is a timed release; it goes out the door every six months, regardless.
3. Give it a month or two to stabilize, it will be fine.
